F1 2027 Driver Market: Verstappen’s Silence Speaks Louder Than Words at Spa

The Belgian Grand Prix delivered another win for Kimi Antonelli, but the real story at Spa unfolded off track, in Thursday’s media day. As Formula 1’s 2027 driver market heats up, what was said in the press conference room mattered more than Sunday’s result.

Verstappen Stays Silent on His Future

Max Verstappen was asked directly about his future by several reporters and gave uncharacteristically short answers, repeatedly declining to confirm his 2027 plans. For a driver rarely short of opinions, the reticence was telling — suggesting a decision process still in motion rather than a straightforward stay at Red Bull.

Piastri Confirms, Bearman Left Waiting

Oscar Piastri, by contrast, gave an unequivocal one-word confirmation that he will race for McLaren in 2027. Nico Hülkenberg was similarly direct about his future. Oliver Bearman’s situation looked murkier: Haas boss Ayao Komatsu said the decision rests with Ferrari, and Bearman himself confirmed he currently has no contract for next season.

Sainz Plays the Long Game

Carlos Sainz spent his session highlighting his own statistics — a move widely read as a pitch to teams beyond Williams, while Fernando Alonso signalled his future at Aston Martin extends well past the cockpit.
