Alpine’s Monaco Penalty Reversal Divides the Paddock

Before a wheel had turned in Spain, controversy from Monaco continued to loom over the paddock. Alpine’s right of review on Thursday proved successful, with two five-second penalties for pit lane speeding rescinded. Pierre Gasly’s third-place Monaco finish was reinstated, while Isaac Hadjar was demoted to fourth.

Manager Guillaume Le Goff, who represents both drivers, told our correspondent he was not troubled by the outcome itself — but deeply concerned by the process. New evidence accepted days after the chequered flag, and a final classification shifted under a rival team’s pressure, set a worrying precedent. McLaren and Red Bull have already filed protests.

Russell Fastest in FP1 and FP2 — McLaren’s Norris Closes In

Russell topped FP1 by two tenths from Piastri, with a heavily upgraded Leclerc a further tenth adrift in third. Verstappen was fourth, half a second off the pace. McLaren junior Ugo Ugochukwu impressed on his FP1 debut in fifth — the standout among seven rookies fulfilling their mandatory session requirement.

FP2 told a similar story, with Norris snatching fastest honours from Russell by a mere nine thousandths of a second. Piastri held third, while Kimi Antonelli recovered to fifth after sitting out FP1 and wrestling with pedal issues on his return. Williams endured a bruising afternoon — Carlos Sainz and stand-in Luke Browning both retired early — further fuelling speculation over Sainz’s future at the team.

Red Bull Struggles; Aston Martin in Holding Pattern

Verstappen and Red Bull faced an uncomfortable Friday. A balance problem carried from FP1 into the afternoon session, with the world champion particularly dissatisfied with the hard tyre compound. He ended the day sixth, Hadjar tenth. Team representative Pierre Vachê confirmed it would be a challenging weekend. The question now is whether Verstappen can conjure one of his trademark qualifying miracles.

Aston Martin, meanwhile, appear to have quietly set aside performance ambitions until their upgrade package arrives — potentially after the Hungarian Grand Prix — focusing instead on reliability and refining Honda’s counter-measures. Patience remains the watchword for Fernando Alonso and the team’s supporters.

Qualifying Outlook: Mercedes Favoured, Ferrari Threat on Race Day

Mercedes enters Saturday as the paddock’s preferred candidate for pole. Russell leads the championship charge, with Antonelli still finding his rhythm after his disrupted Friday. McLaren looks quicker than Ferrari over a single lap, though Ferrari’s race pace could prove decisive on a circuit where overtaking is notoriously difficult. Both McLarens have also shown markedly improved getaways from the line — a factor that could prove crucial in the fight for position at the start.
