The Formula 1 silly season is well underway, and the 2027 driver market is shaping up to be the most turbulent since Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2024. Monaco served as the unofficial meeting ground, with team principals, managers, and drivers holding discreet talks across the principality.
At the heart of it all lie two names capable of setting off a chain reaction across the entire grid.

What Is Already Confirmed for 2027

Several seats are firmly locked. Charles Leclerc has signed a fresh multi-year extension at Ferrari, covering both the current hybrid and incoming V8 eras. Hamilton, growing increasingly confident at Maranello, is expected to announce his own renewal imminently. Both McLaren drivers — Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri — are committed, while Kimi Antonelli leads the championship at Mercedes on a secure contract.
Further down the grid, Gabriel Bortoleto is tied to Audi long-term, Alexander Albon remains at Williams, Pierre Gasly continues at Alpine, and Oliver Bearman is set to stay at Haas through his indirect Ferrari ties.
The Two Drivers Who Could Change Everything

The first wild card is Max Verstappen. The four-time world champion has publicly questioned whether modern Formula 1 delivers the racing he craves. A sabbatical — or permanent exit — cannot be ruled out.
The second is Carlos Sainz, who multiple sources confirm is eager to leave Williams, dissatisfied with the team’s development trajectory.
Two Scenarios, Two Very Different Grids

If Verstappen stays, the market moves slowly — perhaps three or four seat changes at most. If he leaves, Red Bull’s senior seat opens, Sainz moves to fill it, and a cascade of moves follows across at least nine seats — the most dramatic reshuffle since 2014.
Analysts place the probability at roughly 60% Verstappen stays, 40% he departs. But in Formula 1, the unexpected is rarely far away.
