The Exit Clause Worth More Than His Fortune
Buried in Verstappen’s current deal is a performance clause: finish outside the championship’s top two by the summer break, and he can walk away free of charge. Currently sixth in the standings, that clause has reportedly activated. He has until October to use it.
Red Bull’s new offer doesn’t buy out that clause — it simply wraps it into an extension paying him roughly what he already earns, while removing his exit routes entirely.
Mercedes, McLaren and a Shrinking Market
Toto Wolff has all but ruled out a Mercedes seat, confirming his commitment to George Russell and Kimmy Antonelli for 2027. That leaves McLaren as the most realistic alternative — though reportedly at a lower salary than Verstappen currently commands.
A Sabbatical Instead of Retirement?
According to ESPN, Verstappen may be leaning toward a break rather than a permanent exit — a move that could manufacture scarcity and drive up his market value on return, much like Fernando Alonso’s comeback did.
Analysts estimate the gap between his best and worst-case outcomes exceeds $100 million, making this less a driving decision than a high-stakes negotiation.
