Mercedes Civil War: Antonelli and Russell Come to Blows in the Sprint
The sprint race produced the weekend’s most explosive storyline. Kimi Antonelli, dropped from second to third after a fierce on-track battle with teammate Russell, accused his colleague over the radio of pushing him off the circuit. The pit wall intervened, urging Antonelli to refocus. Russell’s message to the paddock was unmistakable: he is fighting for a championship and the gloves are off. The pair later stated publicly that the matter had been resolved. Whether that holds into Sunday’s main race — and across the remainder of the season — remains the most compelling subplot in Formula 1.
McLaren Consolidate, Ferrari Struggle, Red Bull Fade
Lando Norris finished second in the sprint with Oscar Piastri fourth, confirming McLaren as Mercedes‘ closest challengers. Lewis Hamilton flew the Ferrari flag with characteristic determination, though Charles Leclerc endured a difficult weekend throughout. Max Verstappen, returning from the Nürburgring 24 Hours, qualified sixth — his Red Bull visibly off the pace — while teammate Isack Hadjar suffered an engine issue during the sprint, reducing his race to a testing exercise. Aston Martin, troubled by a front suspension problem on Lance Stroll’s car before the sprint had even begun, offered little to trouble the timing screens.
