Kimi Cried in Parc Fermé, the Hamilton Photo That Predicted Everything & China’s F1 Explosion

china gp review

The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix was not just a Formula 1 race. It was a moment. And Getty Images photographer Mark Sutton and Motion Report journalist David Schneider were inside every single second of it.

In this episode of The Motion Report Podcast, recorded fresh off the plane from Shanghai, Mark and David break down one of the most emotionally charged Grand Prix weekends in recent memory — and the stories they bring back from inside the paddock are unlike anything you’ll hear anywhere else.

Kimi Antonelli — A New Star is Born

At just 18 years old, Kimi Antonelli became the youngest pole position winner in Formula 1 history and then went on to win the race. Mark was right there in Parc Fermé as Kimi jumped from the car, sprinted to his father and his team — and then broke down in tears during his post-race interview. It was raw, unscripted emotion and Mark caught every frame of it. As he puts it, moments like that are exactly why Formula 1 photography still matters in 2026.

On the podium itself, Mark describes the atmosphere as feeling like a family reunion — George Russell, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli, three generations of the same team, celebrating together under the Shanghai lights.

The Lewis Hamilton Photo That Nobody Noticed — Until Now

Here’s the story that will stop you in your tracks. Back in 2018, Mark casually photographed Lewis Hamilton high-fiving a grid kid at a Grand Prix. He had no idea who the child was. Eight years later, that grid kid — Kimi Antonelli — is standing on the top step of the podium while Lewis celebrates alongside him in third. The photo existed long before any of us knew what it meant. That is the magic of F1 photography, and exactly the kind of story The Motion Report was built to tell.

China’s F1 Explosion

Mark has been attending the Chinese Grand Prix since its very first edition in 2004. Nothing he has seen before compares to 2026. Over one million people applied for tickets. Fans were queuing at the gates from the early hours of Friday morning. The fan forum was so packed you genuinely could not see where the crowd ended. Add Mickey Mouse on the grid, Imagine Dragons in the VIP area, a Chinese Winter Olympics gold medallist waving the Formula 1 flag, and an incredibly moving farewell moment for Zhou Guanyu — and you have a Grand Prix weekend that felt genuinely historic.

Mark also gives his take on Ferrari’s experimental Macarena wing, the Mercedes power advantage, what to expect in Japan, and why Miami could bring the biggest celebrity grid of the entire season.

This episode is essential listening for anyone who wants to understand Formula 1 beyond the lap times.
