About
formula 1 paddock perspective
The stories, people, and moments that define modern F1.
The Motion Report is an independent media platform focused on the human side of Formula 1. Beyond lap times and results, we document the atmosphere of the paddock, the personalities shaping the sport, and the cultural moments that surround each race weekend.
Our coverage blends on-site reporting, visual storytelling, and long-form editorial work, drawing inspiration from the traditions of premium sports journalism. From drivers and team figures to partners, fashion, and off-track life, The Motion Report aims to capture Formula 1 as it is experienced — not just as it is recorded.
We are not part of Formula One Management, the FIA, or any team. Our work is independent, observational, and driven by access, context, and respect for the sport’s global audience.
Who we are
The Motion Report is written and produced by David Schneider, a Formula One journalist and photographer based in Tokyo.
David holds permanent FIA media accreditation. That distinction matters, and it is worth explaining. Most Formula One coverage is produced by writers watching the same television feed as their readers. Permanent accreditation is issued by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, the sport’s governing body, and grants season-long access to the paddock, the media centre, and the pit lane at every round of the World Championship. It is held by a small number of working journalists worldwide, and it is reviewed each season.
In practice, it means the reporting on this site comes from the place where the sport actually happens. Conversations in the paddock. Body language in a team’s hospitality unit on a bad Sunday. The things said once a microphone is switched off. That access is the foundation of everything published here.
David is the author of several books, including The 80/20 Investor and Index Funds & ETFs.
He came to Formula One journalism from a career in commercial banking and finance, a background that shapes the way this site covers the commercial side of the sport. Formula One is a business as much as a competition, and the money, the contracts, and the regulatory decisions often explain more than the lap times do.
He has covered the World Championship since 2018, reporting from circuits across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.
The Motion Report Podcast
The Motion Report Podcast is hosted by David alongside Mark Sutton, one of the most recognised photographers in Formula One. Mark has documented the sport for four decades, and his archive spans generations of drivers, teams, and machinery.
The podcast runs in three formats. The Moment revisits defining images and the stories behind them. Paddock Life — Unseen looks at the sport beyond the results. Through the Lens: Then vs Now examines how Formula One has changed across eras, told by someone who was there for most of it.
What we cover
Race weekend reporting and analysis, from practice through to the podium. The driver market, contracts, and the commercial machinery behind team decisions. Technical development through the season, including the power unit regulations reshaping the 2026 grid.
Paddock Life — the cars, the watches, the residences, and the culture surrounding the sport.
Original photography from every race we attend.
How we work
We report what we can verify. Where information comes from paddock sources rather than official confirmation, we say so plainly. Where a figure is reported elsewhere rather than confirmed, we attribute it rather than presenting it as fact. We correct errors when we find them, and we mark the correction rather than quietly editing the page.
We hold minority positions when the evidence supports them, and we do not adjust a view to match the consensus.
We are not part of Formula One Management, the FIA, or any competing team. Accreditation grants access, not affiliation. Our editorial judgements are our own, and nothing on this site is subject to approval by any party we cover.
