Fernando Alonso has effectively confirmed that Aston Martin has conceded the first half of the 2026 Formula 1 season — just four races in. Speaking at the Miami Grand Prix media session, the two-time world champion stated bluntly that no significant performance upgrades are expected until after the summer break, around Race 14.
“If I finish P5 in some race, I’ll probably retire that afternoon,” Alonso told assembled journalists, drawing an uncomfortable silence from the press room.

Why Aston Martin Is Delaying Upgrades
The decision to freeze development is rooted in cold financial logic. With the nearest midfield rival one full second ahead, incremental gains of two-tenths per race would not meaningfully change the team’s grid position — and would needlessly burn through the budget cap.
Team Principal Mike Krack confirmed the focus has shifted toward resolving a complex vibration issue at the engine-chassis interface with Honda. The problem only emerged when the power unit was installed in the actual race car — invisible on Honda’s dyno until a full car was shipped to Sakura for bench testing.
What Comes Next for Alonso and Aston Martin
Five more races — Canada, Austria, Britain, Hungary, and Belgium — are expected to bring no change in pace before the summer shutdown. A major upgrade package is then targeted around the Dutch Grand Prix or Monza in September.
Despite the struggles, both Alonso and Lawrence Stroll are reported to be open to a 2027 contract extension. Alonso, who became a father in March 2026, has previously spoken about wanting to complete motorsport’s Triple Crown.
